When I was in health coaching school I remember the founder telling us a story about how his whole interest in the health industry began. As a young man working at Whole Foods he would observe people coming in and out of the store. He would see people who were consuming extremely clean and healthy diets walking by, yet they didn’t have that look of vitality (life), and he would notice other people who were his friends who didn’t eat as conscientiously, who exuded lots of energy and a zest for life.

He knew there had to be more to the story. Like the scripture saying: “Man cannot live on bread alone.”, there’s so much more to the wellness formula than just what we put in our bodies. Not that what we consume is not important, it’s just that it doesn’t end there.

Our school refers to the ‘circle of life’, the circle of life consists of all the many facets of being alive that keep us balanced, healthy and whole. Considered primary food, and food actually being secondary, it includes aspects like family, spirituality, exercise, finances, etc. Whenever there’s a deficit within any of these areas, it creates an imbalance in the person’s life. This would explain why even someone who’s taking care of their nutritional needs, if other areas of their life, for example: emotional and spiritual are out of balance, it can have an overall effect on their state of well-being. This explains so much when you look around you at the lives of people.

And sadly, much of this is not discussed in conventional nutrition counseling. And of course the opposite is true, someone who may not have the best diet but is prospering in many of the other areas of the circle of life may be even healthier than the person who is very disciplined nutritionally. It makes me think of the adage you cannot judge a book by its cover. There so much more going on below the surface. So if you are struggling to achieve the true height of wellness, it may be a good idea to look at these other aspects to get a bigger picture of what’s really going on and to develop alternate strategies in order to fix it.
